Thassos

The island of the sirens

In the 7th century BC, an oracle of the Delphi Oracle, leads the Parians led by Telesicles in Thassos, ordering them to build a city that “to be seen from everywhere”. The new city soon gained wealth and power, by establishing colonies on the coasts of Macedonia and Thrace, such as Neapolis (nowadays Kavala) and Krinides.

During the Byzantine period, Byzantines and Venetians became alternately Myrians on the island, with last the Genovese family of Gattilusio. The enslavement by the Turks follows, which lasts until 1912, liberty was gained in 1913. Since then, the Thassians were present in all the struggles of the Nation.

Kavala

The city of Kavala was built in the 7th century BC by Thassian colonists. It is one of the most beautiful cities of Macedonia, combining the urban character with the blue of the coasts, the imposing Mount Pangaion with the wet element of Nestos River. Initially its first name, was «Neapolis», it became an ally of Pericles' Athens and a seaport of Philippi, the most important center during the Macedonian era.

Philippi

In 357 BC, Philip II attached the region and re-established Krinides as Philippi, put an end to the Thracian invasions. The city of Philippi became the foremost royal colony and its annexation was a steady step towards the realization of the expansion of Macedonia. During the Macedonian domination, Philippi is one of the main cities of the Macedonian Kingdom with economic evolution and special privileges.

Mud baths of Krinides

17 km from Kavala are the Mud Baths of Krinides. Surrounded by greenery, it is ideal to immerse yourself in clay and enjoy the health benefits. The healing effects as well as cosmetic properties of these thermal springs were discovered by our ancestors since the Homeric times.
